Everything vintage can be new again.

Spiegel Furniture Company was founded in 1865. After spending the final few months of the Civil War in a Confederate prison camp, Joseph Spiegel settled in Chicago. He opened J. Spiegel and Company, a small home furnishings retail operation located on Wabash Avenue in Chicago’s loop. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of the are’s business district including the Spiegel store. After the fire, Spiegel Company was rebuilt and by 1874 the company was prospering again. In 1893, the company reinvented itself as Spiegel House Furnishings Company.

This beautify Spiegel Vanity was sold to Phillip Levy & Company Complete Home Furnishings, Richmond, VA. I was able to locate a picture of the Home Furnishings business in downtown Richmond and discovered that it existed in 1921 and 1922. I was able to find a year-end income statement for those years only, not sure how long it was in existence. I suspect this is an early piece from that time frame.

This vanity was first painted in General Finishes Perfect Gray (a new 2019 color) and then painted with GF Argentine Pearl. Argentine Pearl gives the piece a metallic look, making it modern again. The vanity was seal with GF High Performance Top Coat Flat. This piece has it’s original hardware and shipping label from Spiegel’s to Phillip Levy & Co. Richmond, VA.
